The Office, 1996

The white-collar workplace, drawn by the software that ran it.

Fourteen objects from the Microsoft Office 97 clip-art library, all of one subject: the workplace. The show collects the genre's stock figures — the businessman, the handshake, the meeting, the desktop computer, the printer, the telephone — the categories a mid-1990s office reached for when it needed to picture itself. What follows is that vocabulary, not any single portrait within it.

The interest of this material is its circularity. This imagery shipped bundled with a productivity suite — Word, Excel, PowerPoint — and its working purpose was to furnish the memos, overhead transparencies, and printed newsletters produced in exactly the kind of office it depicts. The clip art of the 1996 workplace was drawn to be pasted into the documents of the 1996 workplace. It is a self-portrait, made by the tool, of the room the tool sat in: a stock vocabulary of professionalism — the tie, the handshake, the meeting, the terminal — offered back to the professionals who would spend it.

Read at the distance of thirty years, the vocabulary has aged into evidence. The monitors are deep and beige, the telephones are corded, the desks are stacked with paper a later office would keep on the screen. None of it was intended as documentary; all of it now reads that way. This is the vernacular iconography of white-collar work at the exact moment before the web reorganized it, preserved not because anyone drew it well but because everyone used it.

14 objects on the wall

A person in a yellow turtleneck with an open book, a clock, and a roll of paper on a desk. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00012 The black and white photo shows a group of business professionals sitting around a conference table with papers on it; some individuals appear to be engaged in conversation while others look at documents. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00162 The image shows a man walking down an alleyway with his briefcase under his arm; he is dressed professionally wearing blue suit pants and carrying a brown bag in one hand while holding onto another object that appears to be a tie, which isn't fully visible due to its position behind him. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00167 The image shows a man wearing blue suit with pink tie shaking hands with another person who is also dressed professionally but whose gender cannot be determined from this angle. They appear to be in an office environment as suggested by their attire and setting, which includes what looks like a desk or table on the right side of the frame. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00170 The illustration shows a black and white representation of an office desk with various items on it: papers stacked neatly in front of each other; to their right is a calculator displaying numbers 0 through 9, suggesting calculations being made; above these materials rests what appears to be a pen or pencil. The image has been edited for color and includes two small figures that seem like they are interacting with the desk items: one figure holds up papers as if presenting them while another seems to add numbers on an invisible calculator, suggesting collaboration in work tasks such as accounting or CA-1996-mso97clipart-00265 The illustration depicts a man sitting at an office desk with his back to us while using a computer monitor that is turned off; next to him stands another person who appears to be assisting in some way, possibly by pointing towards something on the screen of the desktop computer or explaining it verbally. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00389 The black and white illustration shows a person sitting at an office desk with their back to us; there's also what appears to be a computer monitor in front of them on top of the table. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00390 The black and white illustration shows a computer keyboard with red keys on top of it next to an old-fashioned printer that has paper coming out from its front side. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00391 The illustration shows a man sitting at an office desk with his back to us; he is using a computer keyboard on top of what appears to be a monitor screen that displays nothing but white space. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00501 The black and white illustration shows a printer with paper coming out of it on top of what appears to be an office desk in front of which there is also another object that resembles a calculator or cash register, suggesting this could represent a workspace setting where printing documents might occur alongside financial transactions. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00596 The image shows a red telephone with its cord coiled up next to it on what appears to be an old-fashioned rotary dial phone base. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00818 The black and white illustration shows a desktop computer with an old monitor on top of it next to a keyboard labeled "IBM" in front of what appears to be a printer. CA-1996-mso97clipart-00925 The black and white illustration shows a cluttered desk with various items such as papers scattered around it; there is no text present in this image. CA-1996-mso97clipart-01035 The image shows a person sitting at an office desk with papers on it, holding what appears to be a pen over them as if writing or drawing something.
